HSRP: UNDERSTANDING TOPOLOGY, MULTIPLE VLAN MULTIPLE GROUP


UNDERSTANDING LIVE SCENARIO:

Case:  Multiple VLAN’s and Single HSRP group

VLAN’s: 3, 4, 7 present in the LAN network

Group 1 is created to provide Redundancy and Load sharing

R1 is made active for VLAN3 & 7

R2 is made active for VLAN4

Practically, if we have 40 VLAN’s present in LAN network. So, we can create 4 groups. Each group can load share near to 10 VLAN’s. This task can be completed by a single group. But, CPU utilization will go very high.

Note: For every SVI(or L3 Vlan’s) created, to enable communication between R1 and R2, L2 Vlan’s has to be created. So, here, at R1 and R2, Vlan3,4 and 7 has to be created. Only, then HSRP hello messages will start travelling.

STEPS TO FOLLOW

1.  For every Vlan, SVI is created on R1 and R2, switches, 6513

2.  In every SVI interface, HSRP Virtual ip’s  are created

3.  Here, for Group 1, we have three Virtual ip’s  for three SVI

CREATING SVI FOR EVERY VLAN

standby 1 ip 10.144.4.1

standby 1 priority 1

 standby 1 priority 110

 standby 1 preempt delay minimum 120

CONCLUSION

As per priority R1 is active for VLAN3 and VLAN7
And R1 is standby for VLAN4
As per priority

R2 is active for VLAN4

And R2 is standby for VLAN3 and VLAN7
