SNMP CONFIGURATION: CISCO WAP MANAGED BY WLC

TOPICS

SCENARIO

SNMP POLLING

SNMP TRAPS

*******************

SCENARIO

We need to implement SNMP polling & SNMP traps for Cisco Wireless Access Point (Model: Aironet).

NOTE: In our case, WAP’s are managed through WLC’s (Wireless Controller).

SNMP POLLING

DETAILS

If WAP’s are managed through WLC’s, we don’t have access to configuration mode on WAP’s.

Whatever has to be done for WAP’s configuration, it will be done on WLC’s.

EXAMPLE

AP_1#config terminal

         ^

% Invalid input detected at ‘^’ marker.

We need to enable any configuration for WAP’s through WLC.

But, To enable SNMP polling for WAP’s, even on WLC, we don’t have any option.

CONCLUSION

We can only enable ping monitoring on WAP’s, managed through WLC’s. Ping monitoring means, we can only check if WAP is up or not, nothing else or any specific parameter.

SNMP TRAPS

DETAILS

To configure SNMP traps, we don’t have the specific option like High CPU utilization; we have the generalized or broad categories mentioned below.

EXAMPLE

WLC-5760(config)#snmp-server enable traps wireless ?

AP               AP

RRM              RRM

bsn80211Security Security related trap

bsnAccessPoint   Access Point traps

bsnAutoRF        RF related traps

bsnGeneral      General Controller traps

bsnMobileStation Controls wireless client traps

bsnRogue        Rogue related traps

client            client

mfp               MFP

mobility         mobility

rogue            rogue

CONCLUSION

We have broad categories of SNMP traps, in every category, there are set of SMNP traps which will be enabled.

If we want to enable few SNMP traps out of broad category, we need to enable SNMP pruning at SNMP server end.
