HOW TO NAVIGATE IN RIVERBED

Suppose, we received alarm: Riverbed device <device name> in site <site name> is not healthy or down.

At first glance, we are not able to identify what exactly has happened on Riverbed device?

In Riverbed, we have multiple menu options given at the top shown in below picture.

Steps: Go to Reports –> Diagnostics  –>  Alarm status

ALARM STATUS

As shown above, page displayed includes all the alarm types & in front of every alarm, we have the status, either Ok or there might be some issue.

Identify the problem area.

CASE STUDY 1

Asymmetric Routing alarm generated.

Solution: Riverbed does not support Asymmetric routing, so asymmetric routing has to be removed.

ASYMMETRIC ROUTING MEANING

Asymmetric routing means, if we are communicating between two points, A & B.

Path of traffic while going from A to B is different from the path of traffic while going from B to A.

ASYMMETRIC ROUTING ISSUE

APPROACH TO FIND ASYMMETRIC ROUTING

First do the trace route from location A to location B, capture the output.

Then, do the trace route from location B to location A, capture the output.

Compare the above obtained outputs & see if path followed for traffic is same or different.

If path is different in both the cases, remove the Asymmetric routing.

CASE STUDY 2

Admission Control alarm generated

ADMISSION CONTROL MEANING

Steps: Go to Reports –>  Diagnostics –> System Details

Below output will show maximum number of connections supported. Not showing as of now, as the device is stable & there is no issue.

NUMBER OF CONNECTIONS

On Riverbed device, we have different licenses installed.

Depending on license, there is a maximum limit of connections optimized by Riverbed at a particular time.

Example: as per license installed, we have the maximum limit of 7500 connections at a time.

As per recommendation, number of connections at a particular time should be less than 85% of the maximum limit. If this limit is crossed, we will receie the alarm.

Solution: To upgrade the license.
